The right farewell really matters
Saying goodbye to someone we love is one of the hardest moments we experience in life, which is why having the opportunity to hold a farewell ceremony can be so important for those left behind. Whether this takes place with a loved one present before their final journey, or afterwards in a separate gathering, creating space to come together matters deeply.
A farewell is more than a formal occasion — it is a moment to pause, reflect, share memories, honour a life, and support one another through grief. It gives family and friends a dedicated time and place to say goodbye properly, and that process can play an important role in helping us begin to navigate loss.
Many people are now choosing more personal arrangements, including direct or unattended cremations, but that does not mean a meaningful ceremony cannot still take place. In fact, families often find comfort in arranging a separate gathering that feels relaxed, intimate and truly reflective of the person they are remembering.
A farewell does not have to be held in a church or crematorium. It can take place in a peaceful service room, a garden, a village hall, or anywhere that feels right for the family and the life being celebrated.
I feel privileged to work alongside A.G. Down Funeral Directors, E.A. Dodd & Son Funeral Directors, E.A. Dodd & Son Funeral Directors and Overmass & Chapple Funeral Directors, each of whom offer welcoming and personal spaces where families can gather in comfort at such a precious and emotional time.
Every goodbye deserves care, compassion and the chance to reflect a life in a meaningful way.
